December 2011

TO PROTECT THE FUTURE OF OUR CLUB, PLEASE KEEP FIREARMS SAFETY IN MIND AT ALL TIMES!

Christmas Meeting/Party

The Christmas party/meeting will be held on December 21. The party will begin between 5 & 5:30pm. The meeting will be called to order at 7:30 & promptly adjourned until January. The Board would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and a Merry Christmas.

Clubhouse Insulation

The club is seeking an estimate to insulate the ceiling of the clubhouse to reduce the dramatic heat loss problem through the ceiling.

Fall Field Day Turnout

Wayne Carbone would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support of the Groton Sportsmen's Club Fall Field Day. The monies we raise thru the Field Day and the raffles that we hold help us to make many charitable contributions to the communities in which our members live as well as other charitable and medical organizations. We have also responded to pleas for help during times of natural disasters here and abroad.

Here is the list of the winners of the 2011 Fall Field Day Raffle. The way the raffle was conducted was to choose young people from the audience to come up and pick a ticket from the drum. The had to face the crowd and not the drum. the ticket was drawn and the name was read. The ticket was passed to a member of the head table and the name was then verified. For the first time that anyone can remember a lucky individuals ticket was drawn for both the 2nd and 3rd prize. This was as surprising to us as I am sure it is to you. Once again I want to thank you for your support and I hope we will be able to count on you in the future. On behalf of the Groton Sportsmen's Club, I want to wish you and your loved ones a very Happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Attention: Groton Sportsmen's Club members. Pleas see that this information is provided to those individuals that purchased tickets from you.

Newsletter Via Email

Receiving the newsletter via e-mail helps save postage and returned mail. If you want to get the newsletter by e-mail, send a note with your name and membership number to Jim Kelley at jimandmarykelley@aol.com.

NOTE: If there is a special meeting notice, the club bylaws require delivery of the newsletter by US Mail. As a result, you'll receive it in the mail, even if you've requested e-mail delivery.

Please be sure to notify Jim Kelley jimandmarykelley@aol.com should your address change. Also, if you have requested that you receive the Newsletter via e-mail and somehow continue or begin getting the newsletter again by snail mail a couple of things may be the cause; it may be getting kicked into your junk mail OR we are not yet aware of the problem. Send Jim an email (see email address listed above or phone him at the number listed in the Chairman listings) & the correction will be made.

Club House Kitchen

Breakfast kitchen crew-Thanks to Kathy Rochan we will have breakfasts served on an ongoing basis. Please take note that on December 25th and January 1st there will be no breakfast served. Otherwise, as many volunteers as are looking for hours are welcome to join the crew. Kitchen guidelines reminder:

Special requests will be handled at the discretion of the kitchen crew.

Kitchen area is limited to kitchen staff only. Please respect this rule.

Please be patient with our volunteer staff. Any member that would like to volunteer for kitchen duty please leave name & contact info with kitchen crew.

Exact change is immensely appreciated. Please place empty plates in kitchen window & utensils in soapy water container.

Please be courteous and respectful while dining, this is a family environment/event.

New Safety Zone

Survey is winding up for North Stonington. Signs have been posted. The North Stonington Survey was commissioned to mark the boundaries thereby insuring that club members did not hunt on other peoples land. Prior to this action parts of the boundary markings were missing and this can lead to issues with abutting land owners. Visual posting of the property can now be completed with a sense of accuracy, and abutting property owners can be assured that no club members are trespassing unintentionally. Additionally, land maps will be developed and filed with the town. Safety Zone signs have been posted approximately 500 feet from the southern boarder of the Voluntown/North Stonington property in the area that was logged this past year. These signs state that there is to be no shooting within or into the area behind the signs. All deer hunters and bird hunters must be conscious of the fact that our neighbor's property is now much more exposed than it had been in the past. Respect the new Safety Zone!

New Members

Jim Kelley will be bringing 17 new members on board in December.

Architects Making Progress

Architects are taking measurements and looking at clubhouse building. We expect to receive reports within a short period of time. The purpose of the visit (this time) by the Architect was to record the present building configuration in general including the foot print. This action is required to assist with the development of the preliminary design phase and in accordance with previously issued guidelines developed by the Groton Sportsmen’s Club BESC Committee.

Indoor Range

On the second Tuesday of each month there is an indoor range work party and help is greatly needed. Contact Mike Kopycienski @ (860) 536-2541 to volunteer and get some work hours in.
